Ayurveda is composed of two words “Ayu” and “Veda”. The meaning of “Ayu” is life and “veda” is Knowledge/Science/Wisdom. So, Ayurveda can be roughly translated as “Science of life”.

Ayurveda, a 5,000 year old life science and health system, has its roots in the ancient Vedic civilization of India. It is a holistic system, that leads to a healthy body and inner peace. The foundation of Ayurveda stems from the principle that everything in the universe is made up of the pancha Mahabuthas or five basics elements. Akash (Space), Vayu (Air), Agni (Fire), Jal (Water), and Prithvi (Earth). A combination of these element pairs create the three biological forces or Tridoshas – Vata (Space and Air), Pitta (Fire) and Kapha (Earth and Water). Harmonizing these forces leads to a healthy way of life, while disruption of the balance causes ailments.

Ayurveda treats the person as a whole – the body, the mind and the soul. It helps to maintain balance and creates harmony in our existential reality, both the intangible emotional expressions and the tangible physiological realities with no side effects.

Ayurveda is the eternal vedic science of life, and the traditional natural healing system of India. Today, Ayurveda is at the forefront of mind-body medicines. Ayurveda has spread far beyond its traditional base and is gaining attention throughout the world. Ayurveda, with its understanding of life and consciousness, will become the medicine of the future.

Ayurveda mainly comprises of eight clinical specialties. They are: General Medicine, Pediatrics, Psychiatry, Treatment of Head and Neck, Surgery, Toxicology, Rejuvenation Therapy and Reproductive Medicine.
